This property has been a problem for some time. More needs to be done, because obviously whatever deal was reached before with LCI is not working. There has been no progress on the property (and a lot more dumping and deterioration) since the last time this problem was acknowledged.
I was at the most recent ERMT, and in fact it WAS discussed with the LCI rep, whose name escapes me now. The owners of the buildings (because, you realize, this is part of the Lehman Bros. parcel) tried unsuccessfully to sell the lot earlier this year, and are now attempting to do some of the remediation the property needs themselves, to make the lot easier to sell. LCI is well aware of the ongoing problems with all the buildings on the Lehman lot, but it doesn't hurt to remind them that We Are Watching....
Thanks for the report, ewg. While I understand that they've been trying to sell it and remediate it, the City has an ordinance that calls for $100 per day fines for blight (click "read more" at http://www.cityofnewhaven.com/LCI/property.asp - per that description, the whole kit and caboodle is blighted).
The point is, I presume, to hit those owners in the pocketbook so that they move more quickly. Seems to me that for a commercial outfit LCI should be keen on enforcing this provision (I understand with local landlords or whatever maybe there's a reason to cut a deal). Otherwise, the off-site owners never have any reason to do anything as they don't see the property - unlike the neighbors who see it every day.
I'm glad, neighbor :). It's hard for me to make the team meeting time, but would love to help lobby/do something beyond commenting on SeeClickFix. I've emailed the alder and called/emailed LCI to no avail in the past. It's frustrating to feel like the City doesn't see this obvious problem, especially when it has the tools in its toolbox to solve it.
Maybe if they tear down these 2 albeit distressed historic houses, and build a Whole Foods, thus driving rents up to the point where NO working class people can afford to live here...
Then maybe you complainers will be happy...
Because we REALLY need to meld our city to further comfort a bunch of privileged 2 year visitors...
It's bad enough that these usurpers can put their kids in Hooker School, while never even registering their cars in CT...
Kent 14, I've been here way more than two years, and don't have any concrete plans to leave. I've owned my property adjacent to the Lehman building for long enough that I remember when the building wasn't abandoned and I would wave to the workers inside from my back porch. I'm not saying it has to be a Whole Foods. I just don't want it to be an abandoned-looking, run-down, piece of crap that's nothing but a hazard and a detriment to the neighborhood I call home. Jeez.
Also: the second abandoned house there, 14 Canner -- that's not part of the Lehman property, that's a whole different kettle of fish.
I am ALL for people registering their cars in CT when they come here to go to Yale, it's one of my ongoing gripes that the grad students and postdocs and so on cannot be bothered to do this.
After speaking with the Ward 10 Alder, it sounds like the city is in fact fining the current property owners for blight, but the owners don't seem to be doing anything about it.
as I was parking for the gym (mActivity) yesterday, 3 kids had jumped the fence into this property and were tossing large pieces of lumber through the windows - loud noises and broken glass. Something really needs to happen here.
well, once again, after waiting for gov't help that never came, industry came and is taking steps to make this place decent. Thank you to the owners that are working 6+ days a week to clean this up.

I think the meeting was last week, but it may be possible to raise this at an East Rock Community Management Team Meeting

What do you suggest be done with this building?
