I first noticed them gone on June 7 when I walked to work. How quickly drivers forget about the crosswalks when those signs are gone! I hope they are returned soon... we really had to clean all of them all at once in the middle of the summer at their peak time of use?
i thought that they were removed in preparation for the repainting of crosswalks and installation of sharrows? but even still, this sure is slow going...
in their absence, it really reminds you how much we need them, how vulnerable we are every day.
I've got to say, removing the signs with not even a press release or post somewhere as to why, especially DURING THE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF ARTS AND IDEAS.... was kind of a boneheaded move.
Heck if they were dirty, just let us citizens know, I'd gladly spray a little windex on 'em. The irony of cleaning them for visibility's sake, but REMOVING THEM to do it?
Thing is, every now and then someone will "move" one of the signs to the sidewalk, like if a particularly wide truck is turning a corner, and then someone else puts it back. It would be perfectly feasible for the workers to do this while painting the stripes and the sharrows, one crosswalk at a time. Instead, it feels like open season on pedestrians, all over again.
Totally agree, Pedro. I will happily adopt the ones at Orange/Bradley and Orange/Pearl and give 'em a once-over with Windex in spring and fall, if it helps prevent their disappearance next year. I still find this "cleaning" concept pretty weird, though. Rain is cheaper and better for you than Windex.
Yeah, I kind of think that the cleaning thing might not be accurate since it seems odd!
I think really this speaks to the broader issue, that these were removed citywide without any explanation or dissemination of information.
Traffic and Parking could have easily taken 5 minutes, shot out a press release or informed the independent and/or the register and explained to us what's happening with the signs.
Then, if this SCF post came up, an informed citizen could have just said "oh, this is happening, here's the press release" and those of us could then tell our friends and constituents etc. and everyone would know.
Now, instead everyone is left with a bad feeling and suspicion that our signs are "off at the cleaners." When basic communication protocols could have been followed.
Heee, "off at the cleaners" I just hope they aren't wearing cement shoes!
I spotted two in place on Cold Spring St, at Livingston and Everit. Might have been a trick of the light but they did look pretty shiny and clean. Or maybe they're just new?
Thanks so much, Department. Sorry for calling you boneheads, since I know you guys are pretty hard workers. Could you give us an explanation as to why the signs went away?
Thanks again for bringing them back!
I'm sorry, I meant Trumbull and Olive, not Court. They are also being re-installed on Orange.
The city is painting centerlines. The signs were removed so the paint trucks could run straight through. If they had been placed on the sides of the street, the concerned public would have most likely re-postioned them back into the center so instead we removed them temporarily.
There are still several streets in New Haven that need to have the centerlines painted. As they are completed, the in-road ped signs will be put back.

Yea-they've been gone for too long. This is a big time for walking and I'm not sure why they were being cleaned now.
They've been in City Hall all winter. Why not clean them then?

Yeah, true. Unless they've been... "cleaned" for good. First they came for the pedestrian crossing signs...
Come clean, City Hall!
