Need to disallow right turns on red here, or put up pedestrian crossing gates!

This one sign has caused havoc in the entire North Cambridge neighborhood. Disallowing right turns on red has caused insufferable congestion. My street alone (Clifton) I could not even get out of my driveway this morning due to backed up vehicles and we are 1,000 feet away from the intersection of Rindge Avenue. Rindge Avenue already has its share of traffic issues - but this just essentially ruined walking safety for all the kids going to Peabody School. There is a safe underpass crossing to Alewife station under the bridge. Please take down this sign - it is wreaking havoc and causing road rage that is far worse than the problem it supposedly solves. At the very most, please say "Right Turn on Red After Stop" to avoid people sailing through the intersection without even braking. That solution would be much better.

Still have vehicles ignoring sign and turning right on red, with pedestrians attempting to cross! Maybe post a police officer during rush hours?

john - yes, something - anything has got to be better. No sign and cars sailed through without stopping. With sign, road rage and kids crossing in between cars and 30 minutes to go a half-mile. Perhaps the middle road is some combination of a) longer light cycle for Rindge Ave. traffic, b) Right turn allowed but only after stopping, and c) police officer on morning and evening rush-hour duty. I know the city wants people to walk and bike, but for those who must drive to, say, Waltham or Concord, that option doesn't exist.

The problem with right turn after stopping is that drivers look left for oncoming traffic but ignore pedestrians crossing from the right. The MA16 underpass is great, but useless for pedestrians who wish to travel N or S on the East side between it and Fresh Pond. I know pigs will fly first, but what would be ideal is a pedestrian underpass of Rindge.
