  This intersection cries out, nay, screams, for a traffic circle and pedestrian bridges with bicycle access.

  Wow I agree with this one, except the people going straight through the light (not the left turners mentioned) are the worst. Still going 40+ MPH after the tube, they punch it through the late yellow light to make it across Atlantic and then find themselves on Webster in a commercial district going 45+. So much speeding and red light running going on here.

  It takes way too long to get through these intersections. I can see why drivers would rush the light. These intersections need an update to the timing to get traffic through faster.

  Basically impossible. Look at any light-controlled intersection and observe the amount of time the intersection itself is empty while there are queues waiting to enter. The entire paradigm is wrong. To speed traffic flow, also to regulate it and reduce frustration, you either have grade-separated intersections, very expensive, or traffic circles. The intersection in question is perfect for a circle.

  Three times in the past two days I have witnessed vehicles run the light at this intersection while I was crossing on foot. A motorcycle ran it when I was halfway through the crosswalk. The worst is vehicles headed southbound on Webster and then making a left to head eastbound on Atlantic. Someone is going to get killed or mutilated here. Better enforcement is needed and perhaps a change in signal timing.

  What is being done to improve safety at this intersection? It is the busiest pedestrian intersection in Alameda.

  Mr. Gerstle,

  Sporadic traffic enforcement takes place at that intersection routinely. Even though we cite a car at 8:03 AM, it does not stop an inconsiderate driver from doing what you allege at 8:14 AM. We cannot catch them all and you have gone to great lengths to keep this issue at the fore front of police enforcement. Very rarely do traffic complainants see a violation followed by instant karma in the form of a police enforcement stop. We will keep working, with the reduced number of officers we have, to attempt to make the city safer. I guarantee you will see traffic violations still.

  The problems persist at this intersection. Could some adjustments be made to improve pedestrian safety? The situation is worst with turning vehicles running the light and motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians on right turns. The crosswalks are faded and need to be made high profile. I am concerned that the cross Alameda trail might make the situation worse if it isn't well thought out and tested. Any further congestion at the intersection will only increase the incentive to run the light rather than wait through a long cycle. I've been crossing here for many, many years. Over those years, I have become a senior with a disability and I have begun to feel like civilian on a battlefield.
