Clairmont road is 4 lanes of heavy traffic due to the fact it bridges a large employment center including CDC, Emory, and the VA amongst many other offices and high density residential complexes in the area.
An auto is heading southbound and wants to turn left on Desmond (Desmond is a major cut through) to bypass the heavy traffic that gets clogged going southbound to North Decatur Rd. There is a short left hand turn lane. (holds about 4 - 5 cars) The car sits at the left hand turn lane and there are 2 problems at this point:
1. The amount of traffic lining up to turn left from Clairmont to Desmond can be significant and the left turn lane, again, is short. This causes major traffic backup north up Clairmont Road as drivers on Clairmont Road heading south past this intersection only have one lane until they get past the intersection. During rush hour the one lane backup can go all the way past the VA complex.
2. The cars traveling northbound on Clairmont typically travel fast (an understatement), and are traveling fast around a sharp curve. Its difficult to see them autos traveling around that intersection until the last few seconds.
To recap, an auto wants to turn left and often does not have the space which causes a traffic jam down Clairmont. An auto wants to turn left and has poor visibility of oncoming northbound traffic.
Finally, another auto travels west on Desmond to the intersection of Clairmont. The car wants to turn left to head south on Clairmont. The auto has to cross 5 lanes (including the left turn lane on Clairmont) and navigate cars speeding around a sharp corner to their left (heading north), as well as heavy traffic heading south.
This intersection is a death trap and needs a traffic light before someone gets killed. This is no joke. Is it going to take someone having blood on their hands before it gets addressed?
