Today (1/1/12), my husband and I witnessed two DIFFERENT sets of dirt bike riding teens riding very recklessly up and down Clinton Ave as well as the side streets around Chatham Square. Not only does this pose a major safety concern as there is no regard for stop signs/lights and other vehicles, but the riders are so brazen that they ride around in the middle of the day and even pulled up next to us as we walked our dogs, did their little "tricks" and then burned out as we shouted to them that we were calling the police. We did call the non-emergency number and were told that a patrol car would be sent out, but it would be more helpful if we had an origination address to report (?!?! not sure how that could be possible, but that is besides the point). The racing continued for a good part of the afternoon, so I'm not sure if anyone followed through on our call.
The bottom line is that someone is going to get hurt and the lack of response is sending the wrong message (well, the warmer than usual weather isn't helping either, but this is an issue that happens all year long). I understand that the NHPD isn't going to engage in any high speed chases, but maybe some increased patrol presence would send the message to these individuals to find something (better) to do.

1) ask to speak with a supervisor and get the cell number for the supervisor on duty in your area and call him.
2) Find the location where the bikes are stored and pass that information along
3) Followup at management team mtgs and don't be afraid to put the cops on the spot by asking WHY ??
3) If that doesn't work tell the police the riders are firing guns and/or you see them in their waistbands. They may show up then.
I've been telling the cops about a rider in my hood for 5 years- cops still can't seem to stop him/her- you can set your watch by what time they do loops in the neighboorhood. I guess writing Police reports in the dunkin donuts is more important than preventative patroling.
Getting the message Esserman ???

I have told the East shore top cop where the bikes are kept and he doesnt give a crap. The police in this town dont do traffic duties unless their is an accident.
They know where these kids live, they choose to do nothing. We should all just move out and let Mayor John reap what he has sowed. Speaking of that does anyone suppose Mayor John has dirtbikes doing wheelies up and down his street? I know for sure their is a wheely master in Westville as well.

I concur with the report. I have heard them on Chatham St for long periods too.

Tired of this issue? Then show your support this Tuesday 11/13 @ 6 p.m., all should attend, no excuses! If not you, and us, then who? Tell everyone you know and bring them along if needed--lets pack the room, this may be our only chance for this type of City-wide meeting. Please distribute widely.

"There will be a public hearing on the dirt bike ATV issue Tuesday, 11/13 at 6pm in Board of Aldermen Chambers at City Hall. It's an opportunity for people to express their concerns about the dirt bike issue and for the City to talk about what we plan on doing. Could you all help get the word out?"

I will be closing dirt bike/ATV complaints that pre-date the conclusion of the police undercover operation (see www.newhavenindependent.org/index.php/archives/entry/9_arrested_in_dirt_bike_sting/). I do not expect the dirt bike/ATV issue to be completely solved, but it will be helpful to policing efforts to distinguish new reports from those before this recent operation.
Please open up new SCF issues as dirt bike/ATV issues re-occur.
