Think it's time for the city to adjust the speed limit on the bridge from 40 to 60 km/hour and from the bridge to the overpass from 60 to 80 km/hour. Please!
I think the bridge will collapse as soon as May long ends with all the stop and go traffic on it's broke back. Even so I think we should raise the speed limit and lift the weight restrictions so the bridge Will reach it's end of service date that much sooner and we get our second bridge. The first big load that sneaks over will probably be the straw that rebrakes this camels back. I'm just saying!
Why bother changing the speed limits? 1. It's not going to make that much of a difference when you get to where you're going - 30 seconds, maybe and you're not *that* important. 2. Most people don't pay attention to the speed limits in Saskatchewan anyway, so why bother posting signs?
Yeah lets just throw away safety and rules altogether. People should be allowed to drive across the bridge doing 80kms, while talking on their cell phone, eating a hamburger, holding a coffee, and steering with their knees.
How inconsiderate of the whole city to ask you to drive safely for 30 extra seconds across the bridge.
I agree completely.....its time to get back to normal. I am thankful that the repairs were made, but the bridge never was closed, weight restrictions and speed restrictions were put in place due to single lane traffic. All lanes are open, it makes no sense to have the speed limits continue to be restricted all the way out to 15th NW,
Not sure what your point is RandomGuy, I see people all over the city doing what you describe, not just across the bridge.
No, the weight restrictions were to keep the bridge from collapsing totally. That's why they're still in place. And I still don't see why you need to be somewhere 30 seconds faster than you were this time last year. I've heard people complaining about people trying to make a left onto the Dump road and them almost getting rear-ended by the speed demon behind them. Maybe City Hall is finally listening to more than just the Pressonitis Gang.
The speed limit wasn't a problem for people before the bridge was shut down to two lanes... Then they had to lower the speed "to make it more manageable for drivers turning onto the highway"
Even though its going to be like 2 or 3 years before the bridge is actually fixed... We are back to four lanes open, we should be back to normal speeds..
I cross the bridge, more than once a day, and I cannot see the need to slow down to 60km so far out. What a waste to see a police car sitting there, when there is so much need for them else where in this city.
The city is looking to cause public frustration to cause political pressure and thus get a new bridge. The other reason just might be a hate toward non residents of the prestigious city.
A hatred of non-city residents? Paranoid much? The speeds are in place because the bridge isn't 100% yet and having people brake from 80 to 40 is going to cause more accidents than raising the speed limit for that stretch of road.
Good grief, people! It'll mean, **maybe** a 30 second difference between the time you leave work/home and the time you get to where you're going. Trust me. You're not **that** important that the world can't wait 30 seconds for you.
the police dont inforce the speed on the bridge anyway,i go across at40 and people go flying by and the police just sit in there car on the far side of bridge and do nothing, what a waist of our tax money!!!
The 40 km/hr speed reduction (down from 50 km/hr) is not the problem or concern, It is before and after the bridge. The speed is still posted 60 kim/hr, for another several km (out to and in from the garbage dump road intersection). There are people merging ( at regular speeds coming into city and leaving city out to Hwy # 2 north), how can it be safe for someone doing 100 km/hr to merge into traffic doing 60 km/hr ? Then there are those drivers that must pass everyone, just to be first to cross the bridge. Someone is going to get hurt, it is actually amazing that it hasn't happened yet. City hall has told me that city council has to change the speed at one of their meetings, but that is not true. It turns out that it is the job of that individual person at ciity hall, with whom I spoke on the phone over 2 weeks ago.
I posted previously but my post did not appear. Anyway, driving 40km/h is not going to kill you. I drove over the bridge at the speed limit and I lived! I even got to where I was going! Imagine that!
I understand what you mean about the police being there to enforce weight restrictions. But don't you think while they are there they might as well pull over a car or two, and maybe pass out some fines, because like it or not, the speed limits are posted, and if people are speeding, is that not breaking the law? And the more fines they hand out, perhaps the more money to go towards possibly getting that new bridge? Juss sayin'.....
the Speed limit can indeed be changed by one person in city hall. the Comment by City that a council meeting is required is a lie.
sickofit: have you read your post? do you realize how stupid it sounds by saying we should raise the limit cause people can't slow down to merge?
have you driven into Regina? or Saskatoon? How do you think ANYONE can safely make it there as the limits are reduced and folks have to merge?
Using your logic, 2nd Ave should be 100kph through the city, cause we have vehicles on the way in at 100... makes no sense
come on... it is an issue of drivers NOT FOLLOWING THE LAW, regardless of Where the speed changes.
if there is a reason for the limit being lower, then by all means it should be lower. but till it gets changed, it only delays you by 15 seconds.... 15 SECONDS!
I did the math from the bridge to the Garbage dump intxn.
if you could have done 90k it would be 64 seconds... (you remember there was a 70zone in there? so it would have been longer)
doing 60k all the way, it takes you 96 seconds..... 32 SECONDS MORE!
in total, You are delayed by 47 SECONDS! less than ONE MINUTE. (Yes, I AM Hollering at my computer)
Do you think 47 seconds is worth Dying for?? or even destroying you car, or Destroying someones Life over????
I suppose the police could do other things, Guest, but then they'd be neglecting their primary job assignment, which is to make sure that the weight restrictions are obeyed. Unless, of course, you're more interested in catching a $50 ticket for speeding while an overweight semi causes the bridge to collapse entirely?
Manning a post isn't the world's most exciting job. I've done it and was bored to tears within minutes. However, it's a job that needs to be done and people are counting on the police to do that assigned task to the best of their ability, whether that job be manning a post at the end of the bridge or chasing down a criminal. Both tasks are important. If you have that much of an issue with speeders between PA and the Dump Road, maybe suggest that the police have a car in the area during peak times. I don't know if they have the manpower for it, but they might. You won't know unless you ask.
Sure, but I for one would like to see more speed enforcement in the bridge/overpass area going forward. Before the Bridge issues there was so much speeding it was hard to tell if you were on a highway or a racetrack.
I was also told that the city manager can change the speed limit. There seems to be zero reason for driving on the highway, (both into the city and out of the city on highway #2 north) at the reduced speed of 60 km/hr. The traffic merging onto # 2 (to come into city), and merging onto # 2 from Shellbrook highway (going north). Should be also be slowed to the 60km/hr. Some of the signs that went up since August 2011 have been covered, removed or turned around to backside of signs, maybe a few were missed in error ?
